-Ibadan.

As I approach my birthday in just three days, I want to take a moment to share some valuable advice, especially for those contemplating a journey into agribusiness or farming.

If you are seriously considering this path, I urge you to understand one thing: farming is not a quick route to success, nor is it a get-rich-quick endeavor. It is, without a doubt, a long-term commitment that requires patience, resilience, and significant upfront investment with little to no immediate return.

When you start in farming, the financial challenges are real. Preparing the land, purchasing seeds, fertilizers, equipment, and hiring labor are all costs you’ll face right from the beginning. This is before you even see your first crop. And yes, it can be tough, especially in the initial stages when the return on your investment feels distant.

For many, the excitement of entering farming fades quickly when they realize the road ahead is not as simple as expected. It’s not just about planting and harvesting. There are challenges like dealing with unpredictable weather, pests, equipment breakdowns, and fluctuating market prices. Too many people enter this field thinking it will be a quick win, only to give up when the returns don’t come fast enough. It’s a cycle I’ve seen time and time again.

Farming is a serious business, and if you’re entering it, you must do so with the understanding that it takes time, money, and effort. It’s not just about the crops, but also about navigating setbacks, learning constantly, and adapting to an ever-changing environment. If you’re not mentally prepared for these tough early stages, you may find yourself quitting before you even begin to see the fruits of your labor.

That said, for those who stick with it, farming offers unmatched rewards. There’s a deep satisfaction in nurturing something from the ground up and knowing that your efforts contribute to feeding people and supporting the community.

So, as I celebrate another year, I just want to leave you with this: Don’t rush into farming thinking it will be an easy win. Success in this field is built on solid planning, consistency, and an unwavering commitment. Make sure you’re in it for the long haul.

"People ask me what I do in the winter when there's no baseball. I'll tell you what I do. I stare out the window and wait for spring."
