Have you heard about Etiolation? It’s what happens when a plant grows in the dark. Long, pale stems and tiny yellowish leaves. The plant is basically stretching, trying to find light. This image explains it all.
Now, how does de-etiolation happen?
The moment that plant sees light, everything changes. It stops stretching, starts turning green, and its leaves begin to open up. The plant’s internal light sensors wake up and trigger a shift, kind of like switching from night mode to day mode. It begins to grow stronger, fuller, and ready to photosynthesize.
This is why farmers and gardeners gradually expose seedlings to sunlight after raising them in shaded nurseries. It helps the young plants adjust, grow better, and survive transplanting.
So, next time you see pale, leggy seedlings, just remember, they are looking for light. And once they find it, de-etiolation kicks in and the real growth begins.
