Drip tape irrigation is a great way to save water and improve crop yields, but simple mistakes can reduce its effectiveness. One of the biggest issues is using the wrong water pressure, too high, and the tape can burst. Always use a regulator to keep it within 8-12 PSI.
Another mistake is placing the tape upside down. The emitters should always face up to prevent clogging. Running the tape too long in one stretch can also cause uneven watering, leaving some plants thirsty. And don’t forget to install a filter, small particles can block the emitters over time.
Leaks often happen when connectors aren’t secured properly or when tape ends are left open. Make sure to seal them tightly. Also, if your field isn’t leveled, water may pool in some spots and miss others, so preparing the ground is important.
Before using the system for the first time, flush out any dirt that might clog the emitters. Regularly check for leaks, blockages, and damage to keep everything working well. Lastly, space your drip lines based on your soil type so water spreads evenly.
By avoiding these mistakes, farmers will make the most of their drip irrigation, save water, and get better yields with less effort.
