Farmers in Nigeria face many challenges when it comes to selling onions, but there are ways to improve and make more profit. One major problem is the loss of onions after harvest because of poor storage. Investing in better storage and processing, like making onion powder, will reduce waste and create new market opportunities.
Bad roads and lack of proper transport also make it harder to get onions to buyers without damage, increasing costs for farmers. Prices are often unstable because of too much supply during harvest season and shortages at other times. By coming together in cooperatives, farmers will negotiate better prices and avoid being exploited by middlemen.
Nigeria also misses out on exporting onions because many farmers don’t meet international quality standards. If we focus on better packaging, processing, and storage, as well as meeting export requirements, farmers will earn more. With these improvements, farmers will reduce waste, get better prices, and tap into bigger markets, both locally and internationally.
