It is often said that early farmers did not intentionally make planting holes to sow seeds. Instead, they would eat the fruit and discard the seeds, allowing them to germinate and grow naturally, a fascinating approach.

However, this method may not have been practical for avocados. Avocado seedlings grown from seeds can take 5 to 13 years to produce fruit, and even then, the fruit may differ in taste and quality from the parent tree. This is because avocados grown from seed do not produce true-to-type fruit, as they are not genetically identical to the parent tree. For consistent fruit quality and quicker production, grafted avocado seedlings are the preferred option, as they combine the rootstock’s vigor with the desired traits of the scion.

"People ask me what I do in the winter when there's no baseball. I'll tell you what I do. I stare out the window and wait for spring."
